Wrexham Council tax and rent rise fears

Wrexham Council tax and rent rise fears

A LEADING councillor says he will battle to ensure Wrexham residents do not face a “double whammy” of council tax and rent rises next April.

It has been suggested the tax rise could be about three per cent and that local authority tenants could also be hit by a possible rent hike of more than seven per cent.

In response Independent councillor Mark Pritchard, lead member for housing, said: “I understand the council could be looking at a tax increase of 3.2 per cent, but I and members of my group want to see the rise kept to less than three per cent.

Lead thieves strike at historic Wrexham church

A HISTORIC church has been left counting the cost of damage to its roofing.

All Saints’ Church, Gresford, fears it could have to fork out £5,000 to replace five downspouts and lead which have disappeared from the roof of the Grade 1 listed building.

The church claims the items were stolen from the roofing in the summer and it has now had to impose temporary measures to prevent possible leaks caused by the absence of the downspouts.

The Rev Canon Tudor Hughes, vicar of Gresford, said there had been two other instances of lead being taken from the roof in recent years.

Community in fear over house burglaries plague

A COMMUNITY is living in fear after a spate of burglaries.

Residents of First Avenue and Heol Hyfryd in Gwersyllt are calling for a heightened police presence after reports of eight break-ins on the two streets just in the last week.

Kate Lloyd, 28, was burgled on Friday between 4pm and 4.50pm when thieves stole an Xbox, laptop and Blackberry.

“We’re a community that’s now on the edge,” she said. “We’re trying to stick together as best we can.

“They’re going through the back gardens and in through the back doors. There are no lights or security around the back of the houses.

Blast fears spark Wrexham homes evacuation

HOMES were evacuated after a garage was torched, sparking fears of a gas explosion.

Firefighters tackled a blaze at a garage in Ffordd Powys, Rhos, and were at the scene for almost 24 hours cooling down two cylinders filled with the highly flammable gas acetylene.

The blaze, which firefighters believe was caused by arsonists, gutted the garage.

A spokesman for North Wales Fire and Rescue Service said they were first called to the scene at 3.20pm on Wednesday because a domestic garage was on fire.
